Marina
Abramovic: okjekter, performance, video, lyd [private view card]
Odense:
Kunsthallen Brandts Klędefabrik, 1996
This picture is a
still from the video installation 'Cleaning the
Mirror', footage of Abramovic scrubbing a skeleton, made for the
exhibition 'Marina Abramovic: objects performance video sound'
first
shown at the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford in 1995. I saw it at
the
Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh. You're looking at an invitation
to
the opening of the exhibition in Denmark the following year.
Later
that year Abramovic danced the Argentine tango with Jan Hoet on
the
opening evening of her exhibition in Belgium for her 50th
birthday.
The scrubbing and the dancing are typical of her work as a
performance artist; her body is the focus of her work. Jason
Oakley
comments how the strong sense of presence in her work makes it a
'model definition of the flexibility and possibilities of
sculpture'.
