Mario Merz: lo spazio è curvo o diritto [exhibition catalogue]
Firenze: Hopeful Monster, 1990
Merz's drawings on tracing paper look remarkably similar in both
materials and form to Cathy de Monchaux's drawing that we saw
yesterday, only these drawings are not originals but are printed as
inserts for this book. As well as being the catalogue of an
exhibition held at the museum of contemporary art in Prato, (near
Florence), this book could also fall into the ' artist's book'
category. Merz has used the form of the book to illustrate his ideas
about curved space and straight lines. His ideas are inspired by a
close observation of nature and he is fascinated by the spiral - 'I
always take myself back to the snail'. This explains his
preoccupation with the igloo - the human equivalent of the snail's
shell.
