Romanesque sculpture undergoing conservation at the Conservation Workshops of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside [slide]
c.1993
'Romanesque stone sculpture from medieval England' was the first
exhibition ever held at the Henry Moore Institute when it opened five
years ago. On the first day that I worked for the Trust I saw the
Romanesque sculptures packed in crates at the Studio in Halifax.
They looked like figures in coffins, sleeping in the cold of the
Studio. They were later installed at the Institute and always gave
me a strong sense of their presence, a sense of being alive but
waiting. The exhibition was a great juxtaposition of new and old.
This slide depicts the sculptures being treated at the conservation
workshops of the National Museums and Galleries in Liverpool before
the exhibition.
