SCULPTURE

Jacob Epstein (1880-1959)

Baby asleep (3 babies' heads), 1904, bronze, plaster and wax

h 11 cm Bronze version presented by Miss Ludmilla Mlada, 1968, Plaster and wax versions presented by Miss Beth Lipkin, 1988

These three babies heads were produced in Paris in 1904. Each piece is in a different material: wax; bronze; plaster. I wonder how much the material out of which a sculpture is made affects our engagement with it? Is there something more fragile about the wax version, that the density of the bronze denies? According to Lady Epstein, these heads were taken from the baby of a model who arrived, with the child, at Epstein's studio looking for work.
