The monumental effigies of Great Britain / by C.A. Stothard [book]
London, 1817
One way of commemorating public figures is the erection of public
monuments. This is one of the oldest books that we have in the
library and illustrates a selection of monumental effigies in
cathedrals and churches in Britain. It covers the period from the
Norman Conquest to the reign of King Henry VIII (1066-1547). The most
wonderful thing about this book is that many of the illustrations are
wholly or partially hand-painted in water-colours representing the
rich colours with which the effigies were painted. When the
Institute held an exhibition of Romanesque sculpture there was a
medieval manuscript from the British Library on display in this room
to demonstrate the colours that the sculptures were originally
painted.
