SCULPTURE

Jean Arp (1887-1966)

Seuil profil, 1960, bronze

h 40.8, w 33 cm Purchased with the aid of a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, 1965

It was shortly after meeting Jean Arp that Vézelay turned briefly to sculpture, during the period 1935-36. The work by Arp in the collection is a late work and relates to his `Threshold' series. Again there is an interplay between matter and air as the the sculpture comprises of two forms - a positive form (the bronze) and a negative form (space) - thus, in a sense, creating two sculptures - one made of bronze, the other made of air.
