Peter Peri (1899-1967)

Technical drawing, c.1950s

fountain pen h 36.0, w 46.0 cm

Peter Peri was always trying to get public commissions but was not always successful. However, in the 1950s he gained quite of few schools commissions, especially in Leicestershire. It was also at this time that he developed a different approach to wall pieces. He developed figurative work, not as part of panels, but as full 3-D forms. To do this, physically, the figures had to be fixed in a special way. The drawing shows just that, "how to fix horizontal sculpture". It also shows how ideas translate into actual works of art and all the practicalities which need to be thought about in the process. Although Peri worked in what he called Pericrete, at first, he experimented with lighter materials like polyester resin and fibreglass. He added metallic particles to make the substance look like bronze. The relative weightlessness of the material must have greatly increased innovative artistic possibilities.
