Maquette for sculpture for the Christelijke Hogeschool, Leeuwarden, 1993
steel and iron
h 66.8 cm
Presented by the artist, 1996
Unlike the Mary Martin maquette for a fountain, Auke de Vries'
sculpture for the Christelijke Hogeschool, Leeuwarden, was realised.
To locate contemporary sculpture in a school is not only an exciting
way of introducing art to a younger audience, but also enables people
to recognise that art is part of their lives, not something remote
and 'other'. This maquette was given to the collection by the
artist, following a study exhibition held in the Study Galleries of
Leeds City Art Gallery, which the Henry Moore Institute organised.
Maquettes were placed on tressle tables - this in iteself I think was
a particularly liberating way of displaying the artwork.
