The maquette for a fountain by Mary Martin is an example of how
public sculpture has the potential to enliven public spaces.
Unfortunately, the fountain design for BP House in London was
unrealised because apparently it was going to be too expensive and
too heavy (it was to be cast in nickel aluminium). I wanted to
include this maquette because I feel very passionate about the
commissioning of contemporary public art and recognise its potential
for bringing challenging, new work into the public arena. I have to
say the piece also interests me because it is by a woman sculptor and
she was producing work at a time when the contemporary art scene
seemed to be pretty much dominated by men.
