Invitation to the press reception to celebrate the launch of Niki de Saint Phalle's new perfume [card]
London: Gimpel et Fils Gallery, 1984
We are not able to smell Niki de Saint Phalle's perfume today any
more than we were able to smell Anya Gallacio's roses yesterday, but
the vibrancy of her invitation card does excite the senses. There is
something particularly sensuous about this particular blue which I
also associate with the work of Yves Klein and Anish Kapoor. Saint
Phalle uses sensuous colours and shapes which communicate a strong
sense of 'joie de vivre' but notice the snake and the black scorpion
on this card. Saint Phalle is interested in the tarot and used the
profits that she made from her perfume to finance a Tarot Garden.
She also made theatrical stage sets and Pontus Hulten, the author of
a book about her work, thinks that opera sadly missed out on the
opportunity to have some fabulous sets and costumes designed by her.
