SCULPTURE

Crouching man, 1956, Phillip King (born 1934)

dry clay h 17, w 17, d 14 cm

This sculpture is particularly exciting because it was produced at a time when King was reading modern languages at Cambridge and his main energy was making sculpture. He produced about 50 figures in clay, including Crouching Man, before officially commencing his art school training at St. Martin's. I think there is a strong parallel between the excitement embodied by the Whitechapel exhibition catalogue of 1956, This is Tomorrow, and King's extra-curricular sculptural activities in Cambridge, occurring simultaneously.
