I have included this 19th century ivory bust because it also creates a
paradox in a similar way to de Cock's marble head of an African boy.
Once again we can make references to tensions between African and
Western societies, made manifest through the use of ivory as the
material out of which the bust of a man has been carved. He is
dressed in a Roman toga, with short, curly hair in a manner typical of
classical Roman portraiture.
