Dalwood's Flag is an appropriate response to de Cock's head of an
African boy. It was produced in 1962. Dalwood had been in France
that year, during a time of increased terrorist activities in Paris
and Algiers. It was not made in direct response to this crisis, but I
feel that there is a certain ambivalence about the physical make-up of
the work and its title that reflects the cultural and political
tensions between Europe and Africa and the continued domination of
Africa by Europe. This sculpture was made over 250 years after de
Cock produced his marble bust.
