The `King Alfred'
statue's on the wrapper was gently eased in an
upright position by using sugar bags which were later melted down
with water, see 8 July. Apart from the `King Alfred' statue there
is
something else on the wrapper which attracts attention. It is a
curious little creature called Mr Cube. Mr Cube came into
existence
in 1948 when the labour government of the day wanted to
nationalise
the sugar industry. With his shield and sword Mr Cube was
successful
in fending of the thread. You can still find him on Tate &
Lyle
sugar packs today. He is a registered trade mark and appears by
courtesy of Tate & Lyle". The wrapper is one of a range
of `blanket
prints' which were produced for the main tourist areas across the
country, they therefore depicted sites of historical significance
or
major tourist attractions. The sugar lumps with wrappers would
have
been sold to customers in the catering trade and used in
restaurants, etc., they would not have been available to retail
consumers. Anybody not interested in my shopping list please
return
to yesterday's image now. Two large Potatoes, 1 onion, 2 stalks
of
celery, 3 leeks, 3/4 of a pint of vegetable stock, 2 apples, 1
tea
spoon of curry powder, 1 tablespoon of butter. Serve with a
little
blob of sour cream. Ps: When you put this together you will get
Sue
Wright's, wife of Austin Wright (1911-1998)- sculptor,
artisticvichyssoise soup.
