Looking up information about Victor, I must include a description of
the work found in the exhibition catalogue, Jacob Epstein: Sculpture
and Drawings, for the 1987 exhibition held at Leeds City Art Gallery.
In an essay discussing Epstein's portraiture, Victor is described
thus: `The head of Victor, the son of Epstein's West African cook,
demonstrates the care taken in balancing the child's most pronounced
ethnic characteristics, the flat nose and full lips, with the overall
structure, which is treated as a series of simple, interlocking
geometric shapes; a balance between naturalism and the abstract,
informed by an unsentimental approach'.
