First of all we must ask ourselves what is the difference between art and craft (it is interesting to note that James Turrell's work has been written about this month in 'CRAFTS' magazine)?

Students doing ceramic degrees are have drummed into them the words 'function' and 'form'/form or function? Ceramicists such as Gordon Baldwin and Picasso would argue that they are artists making art, both showing in very different exhibition spaces.

We could compare James Turrell's ceramics with the work of Langlands & Bell, also part of artranspennine98 and showing at the Henry Moore Institute. They have designed seating for Gallery 2 to be used for talks and conferences. Is it furniture or an art object? It is both functional and aesthetic.

Potentialy, all this does is break down signifiers which make up art historical language as we move towards a mingling of art, design, architecture and craft.
